Silent Movie Night at Ushers Ferry January 29

The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department invites you to take the whole family out for a special evening of silent movies at the Ushers Ferry’s Visitors Center on Friday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m.

A selection of historic short films will be shown starring Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplain, and Laurel and Hardy. Admission includes pop and popcorn.

The cost is $8/adult for residents or $10/adult for non-residents and $3/child for residents or $5/child (ages 3-14) for non-residents. Preregistration is required. Adults may register for program #314601-02 and children for program #314601-01 by calling the Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department, 286-5731, or going online to www.crrec.org.

Shadow Story Night to be held at Ushers Ferry Jan. 22

Darrin Crow and the Ushers Ferry storytellers will bring to life several enchanting stories on the shadow screen. Pre-registration is required. Jefferson High Presents “Almost, Maine”

The Jefferson High School Drama Department will present “Almost, Maine” January 28, 29, and 30. Performances begin at 7 p.m. each evening in the Little Theatre. Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens, available at the door or call 558-1423.

“Almost, Maine” by John Cariani tells the story of the mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the winter sky above, the residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.

Jefferson High School is located at 1243 20th Street SW, Cedar Rapids.

Jan. 24 to be Arts and Culture Day in the Corridor

The Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance (ICCA) says that Sunday, January 24, 2010 is being proclaimed “Arts and Culture Day in the Corridor.” Mayors in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are proclaiming “Arts and Culture Day” in conjunction with the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance Excellence in Innovation Awards (aka The Icky’s!).

“We are thrilled that these cities have come together to declare Arts and Culture Day 2010,” said Joe Jennison, Executive Director of ICCA. “These cities obviously understand that it is the arts and culture organizations are indeed what attract and retain employees to the area and create the Corridor’s great quality of life.” (more…)
