On the Couch: Eastern Iowa’s NFL TV Listings and Hawkeye Stuff

By Brian Siguenza

I’ve heard some complaints from the Hawkeye Nation about how the black and gold aren’t getting enough respect from people at a certain sports channel despite winning at Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State, having an 8-0 record and being ranked No. 4 in the BCS.

One name in particular that keeps popping up is Colin Cowherd. For instance, Hawk fan Ryan Miller tweets that the ESPN personality “gave Iowa a big mouthful of disrespect” and quoted Cowherd as saying “Iowa would get beat by 30 by USC.”

I happened to hear “The Herd” this morning and I must say, I couldn’t tell if I was listening to ESPN Radio or Rush Limbaugh. There was no Hawkeye bashing that I know of, but there was a certain arrogance about this man that really put me off. Even if he loved Iowa, Colin Cowherd would still be unlistenable.

Then there’s Jesse Palmer, who I’ll bet more people remember as “The Bachelor” than a quarterback. For starters, Palmer chose to play the Northern Iowa/Arkansas State card as an excuse for why Iowa shouldn’t be ranked so high, then talked as if the Hawks performed below expectations at Michigan State, all the while lamenting Boise State and Cincinnati moving down in the rankings.

Our First Amendment allows Cowherd and Palmer to express their opinions, so there’s not anything you can do about that. You can, however, choose to ignore those opinions. It’s a great big world out there and you have better things to do than allow a couple of know-it-alls to get your goat. Don’t add fuel to the fire by giving them any further attention.

Speaking of attention, guess which of these NFL games airing Sunday will be the most talked about:

  • Cleveland at Chicago, noon on KGAN-Ch. 2
  • San Francisco at Indianapolis, noon on KFXA-Ch. 28
  • Minnesota at Green Bay, 3:15 p.m. on KFXA-Ch. 28

Give up? Here’s a hint. The FOX late game has been dubbed by The506.com (where the information comes from) as the “FOX Favre Game.” These listings are subject to change, but don’t think for one second that Carolina/Arizona will be airing as the late game here.
