Grant Wood Art Festival this Sunday in Anamosa
The 37th annual Grant Wood Art Festival will be held Sunday, June 14 in Anamosa to celebrate Wood’s legacy and Iowa heritage.
Anamosa’s Fountain Park and the Lawrence Community Center will host art exhibits, food, entertainment and a juried art competition from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wood was born in Anamosa in 1892 and later established a colony just four miles away in Stone City where many of his greatest works were created.
A self-taught artist, Wood is best known for his landscapes that depict scenes of Midwestern life. Despite that many of these paintings date to the depression era, they appear celebratory by certain visual cues; the use of lush colors, bountiful harvests and simplified geometric shapes lend themselves to an almost dreamlike presentation.
His most famous painting, “American Gothic,” is one of the most frequently parodied works of all time.
