Hundreds of parents, students and community members toured Taylor Elementary School this evening during its first open house since it flooded in June 2008.

Last year, the school was flooded with three feet of water. The first floor was declared a “total loss” and the building sustained an estimated $58 million in damages. As a result, 174 students and 61 staff members were displaced to other Cedar Rapids schools.

After months of reconstruction, the school includes electronic smart boards, motion-sensored sinks, restrooms, a computer lab, and terrazzo flooring throughout the building, which is waterproof, seamless and easy to clean.  Though the school is still a work in progress, its doors are scheduled to open on August 25th.
