TV RATINGS: SEC Thrashes Big Ten in Prime Time

By Brian Siguenza

Chalk it up to two top-five teams playing each other, or the suspenseful “will he or won’t he play” storyline involving Tim Tebow. Or perhaps it’s that perception by the American people that the Big Ten just can’t hold a candle to the almighty Southeastern Conference.

Any way you look at it, ABC’s telecast of the Michigan-Iowa game Saturday night was slaughtered by prime-time SEC football on CBS.

The overnight ratings, released by The Nielsen Company and published by Marc Berman of Mediaweek, show an average of 10.06 million people watched the Florida Gators beat the LSU Tigers, while the Hawks’ win over the Wolverines was seen by only 4.21 million viewers.

What’s more, the Big Ten matchup was outrated by “Cops”, “America’s Most Wanted”, and even a repeated episode of “Law & Order: SVU.”
