Iowa City: SCRABBLE Tournament on Jan. 30

The Iowa City Free Medical Clinic and Dick Parrott Free Dental Clinic will kick off its Capital
Campaign with the Free the Clinic SCRABBLE® Tournament on Saturday, January 30, 2010 from 1:00-5:30 p.m. at Old Brick, 26 E. Market St., Iowa City.

“This is a fun way to beat the ‘winter blues’ and raise money for a great cause,” said Clinic Co-Director Sandy Pickup. SCRABBLE® players at all levels, ages 8 and up, can register at the Clinic’s website [www.freemedicalclinic.org] for either the individual
competition or the team (up to four players) competition.

Not Acceptable: Appliances, sharps/needles, hazardous waste.

Items will be taken to Midwest Electronic Recovery in Walford, Iowa, for recycling. All hard drives will be wiped immediately for privacy.

New Morning Pre-School Swim Lessons in Iowa City

The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Division is now offering pre-school swimming lessons at new morning times. Pre-school lessons help children develop valuable skills in the water including, independent floating, working under water, and adaptation to deep water. All morning classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays:

Preschool I – 10:30-11:10 AM
Preschool II – 10:30-11:10 AM, 11:15-11:55 AM

Overnight Knife Attack in Iowa City

Friday, January 1st, 2010

On Friday, January 1, 2010, at 1:46 a.m., the Iowa City Police Department received a report of a man armed with a knife attacking another man near the intersection of Bowery Street and Johnson Street.

Upon arrival, officers met with three victims who said they were engaged by the suspect on the sidewalk.

The suspect, who was not known by the victims, then brandished a knife and began waiving it in the air.

At one point he slashed at one of the victims, striking his coat. The suspect then fled the area on foot while being chased by two acquaintances of the victims. The suspect was last seen running south down the alley between Johnson Street and Dodge Street.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic or light skinned black male, 5’7″ with short buzz cut black hair and long side burns. He was wearing a black short sleeve polo shirt and blue jeans. He was accompanied by a white male wearing a maroon puffy coat. The suspect was armed with a 6 or 7 inch knife.

20-Year-Old Woman’s Death Treated As Suspicious

On December 30, 2009 at 9:33 p.m. Iowa City Police responded to a report of a robbery on Aber Avenue. The address reported, 1227 Aber #5, was found to be an incorrect location.

Officers were able to determine that the actual address was 1527 Aber Avenue.

When officers entered the apartment they found the body of a 20-year-old female. She has been identified as Kylie Perkins of 1527 Aber Avenue #11, Iowa City.

At this time, the death is being treated as suspicious.

Special Agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are assisting with the investigation. An autopsy is being preformed this morning, December 31, 2009. Anyone with information is requested to call the Iowa City Police Department at 319-356-5276. (more…)

Proposed Budget for Iowa City Now Online

The City of Iowa City’s FY2011 Proposed Budget, FY2011 – 2013 Financial Plan and FY2010-2014 Capital Improvement Program are now available online at www.icgov.org/budget.

A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for February 16, 2010. This will be the opportunity for citizens to voice their opinions regarding the budget. Final adoption is scheduled for March 2, 2010. The FY2011 budget must be certified by the Johnson County Auditor’s office and received by the State’s Department of Management by March 15, 2010.
