Medicare Advantage Plan Not Offered in 2010

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Over 7,700 Iowans and 87 people in Johnson County will be receiving letters in the mail in October from the Medicare Advantage plan in which they are enrolled announcing that the plan will not be offered in 2010. Each year Medicare Advantage plans decide whether to sign a contract with Medicare. Some plans make business decisions to leave Medicare all together or stop offering plans in certain areas. Plans must notify members before November 2, 2009 if they will not be renewing their contract with Medicare.

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) sponsored by The Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center, is holding an informational presentation on Thursday, October 29 at 3:30 PM in the Assembly Room of the Center to discuss Medicare Advantage plan non-renewals and options available to those affected. Local SHIIP counselors are also available to meet with you individually. To make an appointment call the Senior Center at 356-5220. SHIIP’s services are free, confidential and objective.

SHIIP is a service of the State of Iowa and does not sell or promote any Medicare Advantage, Part D or insurance products. (Information provided by The Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center.)

Same-Sex Iowa Inmates Can’t Marry Each Other While In Prison

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Prison inmates, just like people on the outside, can now also marry their same-sex partners but not while in prison together, an updated Iowa prisons’ policy shows.

“The (Iowa Department of Corrections) shall allow an offender to be married while in custody following recommended counseling and offender payment of all security costs, however no form of marriage between currently incarcerated offenders shall be permitted,” the policy reads.

Prison officials tell Eastern Iowa News that is because of security reasons and because the department doesn’t allow sex between inmates.

If an inmate does marry somebody on the outside, the person on the outside has to take care of getting a license and making other arrangements, the policy says.

Cedar Rapids: Linn County Jail
Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner said that at least one partner needs to be out of jail to process paperwork. In other words, two people being held at the jail can’t marry.

Iowa City: Johnson County Jail
Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said that requests to marry at the jail are reviewed case by case.  He said it’s possible that same-sex partners both held at the jail can marry but it’s unlikely that they would be allowed to marry if they are held in the same area.
