Wrestling Preview: Iowa vs. Oklahoma State

Iowa (13-0) will host #4 Oklahoma State (8-0-1) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It is a “Gold Rush” event, where fans are encouraged to wear gold attire to the meet.

The Hawkeyes have won their last 51 dual matches, which is a school record. The current streak started with a win over Cornell (32-3) on Jan. 12, 2008, which was the first match after Iowa lost to Oklahoma State (19-14) on Jan. 5.

Iowa has also won its last 20 duals at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. That streak, which ranks fourth in school history, started with a 27-13 win over Penn State on Jan. 20, 2008, which was also the first home match after the Jan. 5 loss to the Cowboys.

The Hawkeyes have won 36 consecutive duals on the road, which is also a school record. That streak started with a 20-13 win at Iowa State on Dec. 9, 2007.

WRESTLING: HAWKEYES DEFEAT BOISE STATE, 20-12

The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team advanced to Sunday morning’s championship semifinals of the 2010 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals with a 20-12 victory over #9 Boise State in Saturday afternoon’s quarterfinals.

The Hawkeyes (11-0) picked up their 49th straight victory with the win, and handed Head Coach Tom Brands his 70th win at Iowa. The Hawkeyes beat Nebraska, 33-3, in Saturday morning’s opening round. (more…)

WRESTLING: HAWKEYES CROWN THREE CHAMPIONS, WIN MIDLANDS TITLE

EVANSTON, Ill. — The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won its 21st overall and third straight Midlands Championships title with 168.5 points at the 47th annual tournament Wednesday night (Dec. 30, 2009).

Iowa State placed second with 144.5, while Central Michigan placed third with 118.0.

Brent Metcalf

The Hawkeyes went 3-3 in the finals, crowning three champions in redshirt freshman Matt McDonough (#3 seed at 125), and seniors Brent Metcalf (#1 seed at 149) and Jay Borschel (#1 seed at 174). It was Metcalf’s third Midlands title and the first for McDonough and Borschel. Metcalf was named the Dan Gable Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament, and took home the Individual High Scorer Award for racking up 32.5 team points. Hawkeye redshirt freshman Nate Moore (133) earned the tournaments Fastest Fall Award, sticking his first opponent in 46 seconds.

Matt McDonough

McDonough sparked a strong Iowa start with a 9-7 win in sudden victory over #4 seed Andrew Long in the 125-pound title match.

Down 5-2 at the end of the first period, McDonough scored an escape and takedown to tie the score at 5-5 in the second period. Long, who accumulated over one minute of riding time in the bout, scored an escape to start the third period to take a 6-5 lead. McDonough scored a takedown near the end of the third period to take a 7-6 lead, but Long’s riding time point sent the match into sudden victory. (more…)

WRESTLING: Midlands Round-up (UNI and Iowa)

UNI Panthers
Tyson Reiner and Andy O’Loughlin remain the lone two Panthers alive after the first day of competition at the 47th Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill.

Reiner opened the day in the 157-pound bracket with a 6-4 decision over Iowa’s Aaron Janssen. Reiner then topped No. 3 seed Steve Brown of Central Michigan in a 3-1 sudden victory match. No. 6 seed Jake Deitchler (Minnesota) topped Reiner in the quarterfinals in a 14-10 decision and push Reiner into wrestlebacks.

Reiner will face No. 9 seeded Colton Salazar (Purdue).

At 184 pounds, O’Loughlin dropped his first match, a 6-2 decision to Stanford’s Zach Giesen, before winning three straight matches. O’Loughlin topped Purdue’s Nick Corpe 7-0 followed by a 3-0 win over Gabe Youe. O’Loughlin wrapped up day one with a 6-3 win over Maryland’s Corey Peltier.

O’Loughlin will now face No. 4 seeded Louis Caputo (Harvard).

UNI Sports Round-Up: What’s Going On?

Wrestling
The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team will wrap up 2009 heading to the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. Dec 29-30. Action is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and will wrap up Wednesday evening.

Basketball
For the second time this season University of Northern Iowa senior center Jordan Eglseder has been named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Player of the Week.

Eglseder poured in 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds in leading UNI to a 72-54 victory over the visiting Wyoming Cowboys. Eglseder made 10-of-15 shots from the field, including draining his only 3-point attempt. Eglseder sunk 7-of-9 from the free throw line, while dishing out three assists to go against no turnovers in 32 minutes of action. His effort propelled UNI to the win and the Missouri Valley Conference to a 5-4 victory in the Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge.

Basketball
The University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team (9-1 overall) and the Creighton University Bluejays (5-6 overall) will get the Missouri Valley Conference season underway Tuesday. Tip is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in the Qwest Center.

WRESTLING: IOWA STATE HANDLES UNI PANTHERS

The University of Northern Iowa suffered a 42-0 loss at the hands of second-ranked Iowa State Saturday afternoon (Dec. 19, 2009).

Iowa State scored three major decision wins in addition to two technical falls.

UNI heavyweight Christian Brantley took the Cyclones fifth-ranked David Zabriskie into extra periods, but fell 6-1.

At 174 pounds, Jarion Beets lead 5-4 heading into the third period. ISU’s Duke Burk scored an escape to start the third period, knotting the score at 5-5. A technical violation by Beets with thirty-six seconds remaining gave Burk the lead and eventually scored a 7-5 decision after adding a point for riding time.

The Panthers return to action Dec. 29-30 at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill.

This is the third consecutive ranked opponent the Panthers have faced in December, including the second top-five ranked opponent. UNI fell to No. 1 Iowa (Dec. 10, 48-3) then No. 22 Wisconsin (Dec. 12, 25-11).

Wrestling: Iowa vs. UNI on Thursday

Top-ranked Iowa (8-0) will host Northern Iowa (3-3) Thursday (Dec. 10, 2009) at 7 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Arena doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and fans are encouraged to purchase tickets before Thursday night.

Tickets purchased in advance are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, while tickets purchased at the event are $12 for adults and $6 for youth. UI students and children ages five and under will receive free admission to the dual.

The meet has been designated the Miracle Meet, in support of the UI Children’s Hospital, and food drive. Fans can bring in three non-perishable food items to the UI Sports Marketing table at each arena entrance and receive an Iowa wrestling decal. All food will be donated to the Johnson County Crisis Center, which serves over 750 Johnson Country families each week.

Wrestling: Hawkeyes Hold Off Iowa State, 18-16

The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team (8-0) survived a late charge by the second-ranked Iowa State Cyclones, scoring an 18-16 victory Sunday night (Dec. 6, 2009) at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. Each team won five matches with the difference being Hawkeye senior Brent Metcalf’s pin at 149 pounds.
